If we talked about northern Thailand, most of tourists might think about Chiang Mai as their first destination. However northern Thailand has many amazing attractions in every province with their own unique charming. As for me, Chiang Rai is one of my most favorite place that I always loved to visit.
Chiang Rai is the northern most province of Thailand that shared the borders with neighboring countries Myanmar and Laos at the world‘s famous “Golden Triangle” where Mekhong river became the international boundaries of 3 countries. Moreover this charming province has many beautiful Buddhist temples in Lanna arts and architectures. However, the most well-known temple of Chiang Rai and probably one of the most amazing in Thailand is “Wat Rong Khun” as known as “The White Temple” for its unique temple stands out through the white color and the use of pieces of glass in the plaster which can sparkling in the sun.
Wat Rong Khun originally was the temple in the village of Ban Rong Khun, around 13 kilometres south of Chiang Rai city along main Highway No.1 Phaholyothin Road. The old temple was very old and needed to repair more than two decades ago, but funds were not available at that time. Therefore Mr.Chalermchai Kositpipat, a local artist in Chiang Rai who later was honored to be National Artist, decided to completed rebuild the temple and fund the project with his own money. The artist intends to reconstruct this temple to be the center of learning and meditation and give the chances for people to gain benefits from the teaching of Lord Buddha and about Buddhist. So Mr. Chalermchai is started his reconstruction of Wat Rong Khun since 1997.However the project is not yet complete as he aim to complete in the year 2070 !!! He considers that his project of this magnificent temple is offering to Lord Buddha.
Nowadays, this White Temple is consist of some main buildings such as “The Bridge of the Cycle of Rebirth” where you can walk crossing the bridge over the small pond with hundreds of outreaching hands that symbolize they are suffering in the hell. The bridge is the symbol of the path way of happiness over the temptation, greed and desire. Gate of Heaven, after crossing the bridge, the Gate of Heaven which guarded by two guardians representing who decided the fate of the dead. Ubosot, the principal building with beautiful and classic Thai architecture such as the three tired roof with the Naga serpents. There are more places to visit in this temple and normally the visitors can only visit in the daytime from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and never open for visitors in the night time before.
