Best Bangkok Street Food: Sukhumvit 38

Let’s get on BTS and meet at Thong Lo Station, the Hip Area with a lot of restaurants and places to eat. Follow us to Soi Sukhumvit 38 which is opposite Thong Lo (Soi Sukhumvit 55). It is the best mix of local food shops where the locals eat. There are a lot of street food here. The opening time is 17:00-24:00 everyday.  Recommended dishes are as follows:

Kuay Jub (ก๋วยจั๊บ)

Thai noodles in hot herbal soup. It tastes good and good for your health too.

Pork Porridge (โจ๊กหมู)

One of the most famous porridge shop at Soi 38 is porridge with pork with century egg or salted egg. This kind of egg makes very good and unique taste. You should definitely try this.

Pork Satay (Thai Style)

Thai Style Pork Satay (served in sticks) is quite different from those of Malaysian and Singaporean styles. The smell and taste are so good. The Satay goes well with sweet vinegar with cucumber and chilli.

Ayutthaya Boat Noodles (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรืออยุธยา)

Ayutthaya Boat Noodles or Kuay Tiew Ruer (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรืออยุธยา) was famously sold on the boat along the canal during the old days in Ayutthaya (the old capital city of Thailand). Now they sell it on land. You can choose different types of Thai noodles to be mixed with vegetables and special kinds of soup. It can be mild and spicy.

Seasoning Set

For Thai people, when ordering any single dish and want to add more tastes, seasoning set is provided on the table in many restaurants (even street food). The seasoning set contains four seasonings which are fish sauce, fresh chili with vinegar, sugar and dry chili powder.

Wonton noodles with duck (or pork) is a common food that can be found anywhere in Thai street food area. You can have with or without soup.  You can also add more seasoning to spice it up.

Thai Fried Noodles with Pork (ราดหน้า)

Thai fried noodles with pork or Raad Naa is also a famous dish served to Thai people everyday.  You can choose between rice vermicelli and large strip noodles. The gravy tastes so good.

Coconut Frappuccino (มะพร้าวปั่น)

You can have coconut frappuccino or coconut smoothie (Mapco Punn) at the food trolleys or local restaurants. You can easily find it here in Sukhumvit 38. Coconut is very abundant in Thailand, so do not miss the chance to taste it. Also, you can choose other kind of fruit smoothies such as lemon, watermelon and mango.

Duck Rice with Sauce (ข้าวหน้าเป็ด)

Duck rice with sauce (Kao Naa Ped) is a good dish you should try in Thailand. Duck menu is good with rice and noodles. The sauce is very special.

Thai Noodles with Fish Balls in Tom Yum Soup (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวลูกชิ้นปลาต้มยำ)

Thai noodles with fish balls in Tom Yum soup or Kuay Tiew Look Chin Pla Tom Yum is also a famous street food menu. You can choose from glass noodles and rice noodles (vermicelli, small or large strip) to egg noodles. Tom Yum soup is very tasty. It is a combination of sweetness, sourness and spiciness. The fish balls of different shapes (round, rugby, flat) and fish wonton are main ingredients in this dish.

The beauty of street food area is that there are variety of sales and salespersons. In Thailand, it is common that some kids help their parents by working or selling stuffs in the popular area. Please feel free to support them.

Mango & Sticky Rice

‘Maew’ mango and sticky rice is popular in this area. This store has been here for over twenty years. Sticky rice is served with coconut milk, topping with mung bean. The mango having a special fragrance for the dish is called ‘Ok Rong’. It goes well with the sticky rice.  This is one of Thai desserts anyone shouldn’t miss.

Thai Desserts Mixed with Ice (หวานเย็น)

‘Nong Am’ Thai Dessert has many selections to be mixed with ice such as crunchy ruby (Tub Tim Grob; ทับทิมกรอบ), coconut meat (มะพร้าว), sweet noodles (Sarim or ซ่าหริ่ม), black jelly (Chao Guay; เฉาก๊วย), ginkgo (แปะก๊วย), longan (Lum Yai; ลำไย) and green noodles (Lod Chong; ลอดช่อง).  It is good for hot day like this.
